Marist Football Club
Marist starting line up today.
Fa’arodo scores on his debut for Marist as Henderson Eels came from behind to draw level in dramatic S-League opener.
S-League defending champions, Marist FC opened the 2017-2018 season with a draw against Henderson Eels today. As expected, it was a tightly contested match right from start to finish. Coach Juliano Schmeling hand a debut to new signings, Fa’arodo, Waroi, Talo and Diego and was a very hot sunny afternoon at Lawson Tama with a temperature of 30 degrees Celsius.
Both teams started nervously with both sides having equal share of possessions in the opening minutes until Marist took the lead in just 17mins. The goal came from a resulting set piece by Timothy Bakale was tucked in by Henry Fa’arodo from close range.
Eels however refuse to back down as they continue to stifle Marist after the goal just to ensure midfielders had little time on the ball to feed the new look attacking side.
But with Dennis Ifunaoa picking the ball up in the space from Maemae, the winger led a sweeping move before curling the ball past Talo at the far post to make it 1-1 in 37mins.
The match locked 1-1 at half time.
Marist returned in the second half and produced a much improved performance and were just unlucky to find the much needed goal. Juliano opted against making any early changes at half time, keeping faith with his starting line-up and was almost rewarded when Iniga almost found the net (just inch wide) from a header. Marist maintained control throughout the second half and pace of the attackers proved consistently troubling for opposite side.
More late drama in the final minutes of the match as Eels were reduced to 10men after Nawo was sent off for a late challenge on Diego. The match ended with one all draw.
