Marist Football Club
Players underwent initial tests followed by afternoon sessions on the practice pitch.
Marist’s pre-season is already in full swing, having played 5 friendlies recently with the teams participating in the Solomon cup, winning three and drew two. After winning the League last season, expectations have already been heightened further ahead of the S-League new season and it’s important a strong pre-season paves the way for a prosperous start. There were several tests being conducted during sessions earlier this week, Anthropometry tests (measuring height, weight, and body fats), fatigue tests, Endurance test, strength/power and sprint tests. This are the main components of fitness program the club is conducting to get the players prepare for new season. Those tests helps Juliano to guide the players and prescribe their session to build their strengths .
One of the tests conducted during gym session yesterday is Anthropometry. It is a measurement of height, weight, muscle and skin folds. Body fats were measured using the skinfold method. The skin folds are recorded over seven sites (triceps, biceps, subscapular, supraspinale, abdominal, front thigh, and medial calf). The test allow the coach to know the amount of fat mass each players have. Excess body fat would affect the football player’s ability to move freely around the field, and extra weight will increase fatigue. Subcutaneous skinfold assessment provides a reliable, valid, and relatively quick accurate information of a player’s total fat mass.
Soccer is a high intensity, intermittent sport requiring repeated explosive actions (sprinting, jumping, striking, and tackling) and players need to produce high amount of force over a short period of time, additional fat mass can be counterproductive to producing force and therefore soccer performance.
Serial monitoring of tests allows Coach Juliano to assess the effects of training program, enable him to guide the players and prescribe their session to build on their strengths. Head coach Juliano Schmeling is hard-working and simply spends a lot of time guiding the players to prepare for the new season. There have been no short cuts, just a lot of hard work in the key areas.
