Marist Football Club
Our national team back to back victories over the determined Papua New Guinea have once again lifted our soccer mad nation Solomon Islands into OFC WC qualifier playoff final after 12years of barren period.
Though football is our number one sport here in Solomon Islands, our national team barely tasted international success in the past 12years. Two comfortable victories over Papua New Guinea just recently lifted us to another continental playoff against the favourites New Zealand All whites. Marist FC new signing, most capped player, 34 year old veteran midfielder Henry Fa’arodo scored the crucial equalising goal on Tuesday’s 2nd leg which our side later won 2-1 after fulltime, thanks to Donga’s 45th minute winner. Team Captain Fa’arodo was the happiest man after the final leg victory, “You know, the OFC nations cup Semi-final loss to Papua New Guinea was a year ago and today I feel like we have rid ourselves from that memory” he said. “I am proud of the effort the boys put in, I think we deserve the win today”.
Official draw yesterday at Auckland confirmed the All whites will first host us on August 28th, Monday. The return leg will be welcomed at Lawson Tama on 5th September, Tuesday.
Solomon Islands have last tasted international success in 2004 when we reach the final playoff with the regional Powerhouse, Socceroos.
