Our Five key players featured for Solomon Islands national team yesterday as they narrowly beat Papua New Guinea 3-2 in the OFC world cup qualifier Russia 2018.
There were starts for Atkin Kaua (Midfield), Jeffery Bule (Midfield), Robert Laua (Left-Back) and Goal Keeper Philip Mango. Timothy Bakale came in later in the second half as substitute. Our players have been in sparkling form and have become an integral to team’s success last season.
It was an entertaining encounter at the fully packed Lawson Tama stadium with both sides looking for maximum points.
Our Midfielder Atkin Kaua who carries superb Marist form into the national team broke the deadlock in just 12mins from kick-off with a low drive across goal.
It was his first international goal for Solomon Islands and is sure to send a message to the coach who haven’t used him in the last two international friendlies against Fiji.
In form Left-Back, Robert Laua played the full 90mins yesterday and particularly impressive with his energy up and down the left side. He worked tirelessly closing up Kapuls attack especially during the second half.
Midfielder Jeffery Bule displayed an exceptional performance in the middle of the park yesterday.
The 25year old has carried on at international level what he has been doing in Marist.
Team mate, Keeper Philip Mango almost had a night to forget when some sloppy play from the backline allowed PNG who trailed 2-0 at half time, came back to equalize 2-2 in quick succession.
The visitors where unlucky not to walk away with at least a draw after hitting the woodwork twice.
Timothy Bakale coming on in the second half replacing Jeffery Bule in 70th min and has given more options to the team. The impact of this player underlined the options available to Felipe Alonso as he ponders his squad for the away match in Port Moresby next week Tuesday.

Solomon Islands beat Papua New Guinea 3-2 yesterday at Lawson Tama, OFC GROUP B, FIFA WORLD CUP QUALIFIER RUSSIA 2018. Solomon Islands goals scored by Atkin Kaua (12’), Benjamin Totori (37’) and Micah Lea’alafa (74’). Both teams will meet again coming Tuesday 13th June in Port Moresby for the away leg. Solomon Islands will only need a point to qualify for final.
